PHS Senior Trent Williams will be representing Phillips High during the annual North-South All-Star Sports Week, starting Monday in Huntsville. In addition, Scott Veal will be one of the North coaches in the boys basketball game. Since being selected for the all-star honor, Veal has been named the new men’s head basketball coach at Northwest-Shoals.
Williams will have the opportunity to show off his shooting skills in the North-South basketball game, which is scheduled for Thursday at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. A two-year starter at Phillips, he was the Bears’ second leading scorer this past season as the team won the 1A Northwest Regional championship, and advanced to the Final Four at Birmingham.
“Trent is one of the best shooters I’ve coached,” said Veal. “He is a smart basketball player and just one of those guys who is going to work extra hard.”
Williams tossed in 499 points last season, an average of 14 per game, which pushed him over the 900-point mark for his high school career. The 5-foot-10-inch guard connected on 75 percent of his free throws, dished off 113 assists, had 74 steals and averaged five rebounds per game.
Other players from Northwest Alabama who will be joining Williams on the North all-star squad will be Jacob Mitchell, guard, Mars Hill Bible; Terence Smith, guard, Russellville; Regaine Watkins, forward/guard, Florence; Jay Watkins, center, Austin; and William Johnson, guard, Decatur.
